We divide food into four main groups:
Carbohydrates are our main source of energy. We get carbohydrates from bread, potatoes, pasta and rice.
Vitamins and minerals are very important for good health. Fruit and vegetables are full of vitamins. Iron and calcium are minerals which help to keep our blood and bones healthy. They are in meat, fruit and vegetables.
Proteins help us to grow, and they help to repair and heal our bodies if we are tired, ill or injured. There are proteins in meat, fish, eggs, milk, beans and lots of other foods too.
Sugars and fats give us energy. Some fats, such as milk, butter and cream, come from animals; other fats, like olive oil, come from plants. Fats are useful and necessary in small amounts, but don’t eat too much! Cakes, chips, chocolate and biscuits have a lot of fat and are not good for us. We call them junk food.
